Thinking Through Poetry: Field Reports on Romantic Lyric is a work of and about literary criticism. It offers new readings of poems from the canon of British Romanticism and it narrates, enacts, and theorizes the arc of the scholarship on that field from the 1980s through the present. Throughout, it addresses hot-button topics of the discipline (e.g. depth v. surface reading; formalism's return; materialism new and old; lyric theory v. history of lyric) but it does so in the context of highly textured and fine-grained studies of individual works. Readers will find a wealth of conceptual resources (many from the postclassical life- and physical sciences and from their antecedents in some premodern bodies of thought) and in the book's critical practice and reflections, they will find clear demonstrations of how to use those resources.
