John Alexander . John Alexander won the 1999 BIBF Composition Competition and since then has composed many impressive works for double bass. Rain, Spirit Passing was composed for Bert and Nancy Turetzky and is for double bass in orchestral tuning. In a modern but accessible idiom, this is full of atmosphere and energy and successfully contrasts the textures and timbres of each instrument with effective changes of registration and dynamic.
