Edward McGuire . Prelude 18. Double Bass Solo. Edward McGuire is one of Scotland's leading composers and has written a number of impressive works for double bass. Prelude 18 was composed in 1998, as part of an ongoing series of unaccompanied preludes for every instrument, and makes full use of the double bass with its fusion of rhythmic vitality and spirit. There are musical and technical challenges in equal measure, utilising the entire range of the instrument, and offering a useful study or recital piece for the adventurous post-Grade 8 bassist. The style is modern but accessible, and it has been popular with players and audiences alike. Prelude 18 would make a good introduction to 'modern' music, but still with a lyrical and melodic approach, and demonstrates more than simply technique. Prelude 18 was written in 1998 and premiered by Tony Alcock (Principal Double Bass, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra) on 11 March 1999 at Glasgow University. It forms part of the composer's ongoing series of preludes for every instrument, begun in 1976, including works for viola, flute, piccolo, organ and concertina. 'Prelude 18 provides an articulate, self-contained introduction to the instrument.' [Double Bassist] Prelude 18 was the imposed work for the 2009 Scottish Double Bass Competition held at the RSAMD in Glasgow.. Grade: 8 - Advanced
