Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf Transcribed: Armand Russell Originally for 4 flutes, Dittersdorf's Notturno is an effective and approachable three movement divertimento for the good intermediate string quartet. Typical of much music from the 18th-century, this is both player and audience-friendly with few technical challenges but much scope for great music making. Ideal for players of all ages and for any occasion or concert, the characterful movements offer new and lively music for all. Transcribed by American composer Armand Russell, this also exists in editions for double bass quartet (RM332), string orchestra and 4 flutes (or 4 violins). Dittersdorf was a contemporary of Mozart and Haydn and was at the centre of 18th-century Viennese Classical music. He was an admired violinist, a prolific and popular composer, and his music is known for its vivacious and lively melodies, original and inventive orchestration, and an exuberance which proved popular with contemporary audiences. Grade: 5 - 6
