Vojta Kuchynka . Czech bassist-composer Vojta Kuchynka wrote many works for double bass, displaying the various facets of the solo instrument but always keeping Czech lyricism and folk idioms to the fore. A composition student of Dvorak, Kuchynka writes in a traditional and accessible style combining melodic interest with technical bravura and most of his works remain in manuscript. Recital Music are planning to publish a number of these pieces as part of their ongoing 'Heritage Series'. This is a charming and virtuosic concert waltz dating from the 1920s. It utilises the entire range of the double bass and has real character and a joie de vivre. Unpublished until this edition, the style is typically Czech with just a hint of Viennese magic. The opening waltz melody is reminiscent of the music of Johann Strauss II and this work was performed many times by the composer.
