Bach, Brahms, Gossec, Handel and Haydn Arr: Rémy . CELLOWISE is an exciting new collection of arrangements from the popular classics. The standard is from Grade 3 upwards and included are Bach Badinerie, Handel Sarabande, Haydn Gipsy Rondo, Gossec Gavotte and Tambourin, Brahms Hungarian Dance and other favourites with attached CD of top quality performances making a pleasant and varied recital programme both to listen to and of course to play. A number of famous 'cellists have used the volume. See the review by Alexander Baillie. FOOTNOTE TO CONTENTS HANDEL. The Sarabande is a slow dance in which Handel conveys great depth of feeling; this music has featured on the soundtrack of films such as Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, De Palma's Redacted and in televised documentaries and series. BACH. The Badinerie is a brief and lively dance; the combination of melody, harmony and counterpoint casts its own spell and explains the popularity of this piece far beyond the 'classical' field. BACH: Erbarme Dich. This aria is one of the centre-pieces of the St. Matthew Passion and is sung after Peter has denied Christ, betraying him to the authorities and to his Crucifixion. ' I don't know why (Erbarme Dich) always gets to me even if I prepare myself, at least to try to resist it?.to hide myself.' Sir Jonathan Miller. GOSSEC. By the time of the French Revolution the Gavotte was considered courtly and a favourite of Marie Antoinette's. The Tambourin on the other hand was a more down-to-earth peasant's dance and composers had to be nimble in their associations ? like the eminent Parisian harpsichord-maker who was commissioned to make the guillotines. THE GIPSY RONDO. Haydn's ancestors were Hungarian; he loved the folk-music of rural Hungary, capturing its zest, spontaneity and invention in his own music. BRAHMS; Hungarian Dance. Like Haydn, part of Brahms's youthful spirit remained with Hungary. This dance reflects the wild, passionate and sometimes melancholy nature of the National Czardas. BRAHMS; Intermezzo, Op. 117 'Sleep softly, my child,' is a lullaby based on an old Scottish folksong. As the music lulls the child to sleep there is a hint in the middle section of future sorrows, but the dreamlike quality soon returns. This Intermezzo shows Brahms's masterly weaving of structure and nuance from a simple melodic idea.. Grade: 3 - 8
